The spinal cord is a network of nerves that travels down the back carrying messages from the brain to the rest of the body. A spinal cord injury occurs when there is damage to the cord. Frequently it’s from a blow to the spine that displaces pieces of bone, ligaments and/or disc material that cut or bruise the spinal cord tissue.
